| What About a Mini Australian Shepherd? |
Now The Mini Issue. A hotly debated issue in The Australian Shepherd community. WE DO NOT breed Mini or Toy Aussies. WE BREED AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS THERE IS NO SIZE Variety, no such thing as a standard, mini or toy. Just an Australian Shepherd. The official Statement of Both the United states Australian shepherd Association(AKC) and the Australian shepherd Club of America(ASCA) they do not recognize or endorse the breeding of smaller sized Aussies, only Aussies bred to the Breed standard. http://www.australianshepherds.org/miniaussie.html Both the AKC and ASCA do not register either a Mini or Toy size and cannot and will not recognize or guarantee that dog is a pure bred Aussie. BE AWARE BOTH the USASA (AKC) and ASCA are now enforcing the issue that they will revoke titles, and registration on Australian shepherds registered with another registry as another BREED.. This includes, Miniature Australian shepherd, North American Shepherd. There has never been a legitimate reason for a "mini" registry for an additional size variety in this breed. The Australian shepherds have a preferred Size but no disqualifications for dogs that are a bit smaller or larger. Throughout the breed history there have always been and will be Aussies that are a bit smaller and larger. Size can be dependent on what a particular breeder needs in a working dog, sometimes a bit on the smaller size, some times larger. The facts, with mini and toys.. Some not all "mini" Aussies share some pedigrees with the traditional Aussie, and may legitimate smaller size of Aussie.. But there are some that DO NOT and are actually a mix of several other breeds. This is of BIG concern. Toys The majority of these dogs DO NOT even resemble Aussies. Dwarfism is a very rare trait in the Aussie gene pool, so the numbers of Toy Aussies for sale DOES not correlate with the statistical chances of dwarfism in the breed. This does mean that somewhere the gene needed to be introduced (breed in a toy breed) If in question there are plenty of websites that offer both toy breeds and toy Aussies for sale, one example is there are several toy breeds that now suddenly have the Merle gene, never seen before.. And yes, in the same kennels that breed "toy" or Minis Aussies.. So the mixing is going both ways. All of this has given the "Mini" a bad name with the Aussie community. There is just to much cross breeding going on, no one is keeping track, so no one is watching for possible health concerns that may show up, or being introduced from other breeds. Also the whole Mini/Toy breed has attracted a large percentage of puppy mills, Back yard breeders, Designer dog breeders who only priority is breeding dogs for money, or producing as many pups as possible. Sacrificing health and soundness and the Qualities that make an Aussie the breed it is. This is WHY Aussie breeders have a big issue with the whole situation. Now not every Mini breeder is bad, There are some members of that community and breeders that working Hard to try to develop a line of quality dogs with strong work ethic, maintain breed characteristics, but breed a dog where a smaller sized dog may be better suited. Responsible breeders have their dogs titled in performance venues, Hip certified, Eye tested, DNA tested. If you choose to go with a mini it is your responsibility you FIND this kind of breeder.. And actually this applies to ANY breed of dog you may choose to go with. It is the decision you make, who you buy your dog from that decides if you are helping puppy mills stay in business, or want to reduces the chances you will buy a dog with a whole lot of health concerns, and will also be the dog you wanted in personality, looks, and character. Unfortunately reputable breeders in the mini community.. ARE few and far between when looking at all the "Mini" Aussies being born and offered for sale. BACK TO THE MUDDYFEET RESERVATION PAGE |
