The Truth about Aussies, Beyond what the books, Internet and even what some breeders will tell you ALL Aussies do best in homes that are involved with their dogs. This is BECAUSE AUSSIES are a ACTIVE breed of dog and need active owners. Aussies ARE A WORKING BREED and this is something that far to often IS not considered by a family before purchase, and sadly far to many "breeders" out there do not screen or care enough if the dog will be a fit before sale. This is why there is a Aussie rescue. This is why there is dogs that have nothing "wrong" with them in need homes and given up by their previous owners. Aussies do best in (Need) homes that have the time and interest to fulfill both the physical and mental needs of what is a very active, intelligent breed of dog. Aussies are NOT good yard dogs, they are not a breed that will be happy sitting on the couch all day. They need owner looking for a COMPANION dog and a dog that they want to spend quality time with. As a Aussie owner you should have a interest in teaching training and shaping your dogs behavior. Keeping a dog like a Aussie happy is more than just taking it for runs, throwing the Frisbee or having a big area (fenced) to run. They are a breed that thrives on life experiences and being involved, they do very poorly if a home has little time or interest in these things. Aussies are "great" family dogs. This may or may not be true, depending on what that families expectations are. What we mean is depending on what that "family" homes expectations are in a dog can make or break it as far as if that dog will be a fit. To me we love that we have to do things with our dogs, we enjoy the fact that they are aware of what is going on. We like that bond they form with us. We love the fact they do form a very strong bond with the family and property where they live. They do have natural herding and guarding instincts. We do not want a dog that you can just step back and not do any work. We enjoy the challenge of exposing our dogs to new situations, people, places we enjoy training our dogs new things. All of this is a must for a well rounded dog of any breed but with a Aussie, if you forget or want a super easy dog or you are not comfortable setting some rules you will end up with a dog that does not fit. The truth is Aussies are the "right" breed for some homes, and not others. Do not get me wrong to us they are one of the best dogs their are. But they do have some traits that for some homes just do not fit or some homes either do not want or can handle. A good breeder should be experienced enough in the breed and in our honest opinion training dogs in general (work and train their dogs vs just breeding them) to interview you and discuss not only the positive aspects but some of the not so positive aspects for some homes. Adding a "Australian Shepherd" to your family should be a 10-15years of enjoyment and companionship. Consider all the aspects of a breed. As a potential buyer one must do some research, look beyond the physical traits, Take into account all aspects of a breed, and consider if this dog or breed will fit with your family. Not every breeder will be as selective and careful as we are in our placements, and unfortunately THIS is why their are dogs in rescue. 99% of dogs in rescue are there because the family got more then they planned for, so try very hard not to be part of that number.
